YouTube increases its video limit upload. So?

Last month, Google’s YouTube made a big announcement related to video upload limit. This is the annoucement:

We want YouTube to be the best place to upload video. Without question, the number one requested feature by our creators is to upload videos longer than 10 minutes. We’ve heard you, and today we’re pleased to announce that we’ve increased the upload limit to 15 minutes.

In the meantime, you may wonder “why now?” — the upload limit for non-partners has been 10 minutes for years. Well, we’ve spent significant resources on creating and improving our state-of-the-art Content ID system and many other powerful tools for copyright owners. Now, all of the major U.S. movie studios, music labels and over 1,000 other global partners use Content ID to manage their content on YouTube. Because of the success of these ongoing technological efforts, we are able to increase the upload limit today.

Sounds good? For some conditions, yes. For us, not really. Okey, it’s not about the video duration, but it’s more about our videoblog production concept. Eh?

Until today, our longest video duration we made is 8:23. It was when YouTube still had 10-minute duration limit. It was not a problem since we did not even need to trim it. Related to increased limit upload, it’s a good thing since there is a room for bigger/longer video duration.

But, we decided to move to different direction. We plan to shorten our video duration (if possible). Why?

  1. Our country does not have cheap and speedy internet connection. Bigger videos mean more upload and download duration.
  2. We believe that under-5-minute is an ideal duration. And it’s a challenge to keep the video short without missing the important message.
  3. Less video production time means more videos to create.

So, is there a chance to create more than 10-minute video? Of course, when we really need to have a lengthy one. :)
